Summary
E-cigarettes have a battery that powers a heating element or "nebulizer" to vaporize "juice" containing nicotine or other substances for inhalation. Please remove all batteries from vape pens and e-cigarettes before placing them in the trash. View e-cigarette disposal information here.
Electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette pens are essentially the same devices. They have a battery that powers a heating element or "nebulizer" that vaporizes "juice" containing nicotine or other substances for inhalation. Batteries and juice boxes/cans/pods come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes.
Juice, cartridges, and pods
Juice bottles for refill cans are usually 1 to 4-ounce plastic bottles. (30-120ml) sizes, although larger bottles are available. Pre-installed cartridges or pods come in a variety of sizes and colors. Juices containing nicotine are dangerous, so still full or partially full bottles and cartridges should be sent to your household hazardous waste (HHW) facility for proper disposal. Contact your county to find out if they accept these items at HHW facilities.
Note: All pods, pods, and bottles containing nicotine should be kept out of the reach of children.
Cartridges containing THC, CBD, or other hemp derivatives
These can go in the trash. They usually have a marijuana leaf symbol, but not always. HHW facilities cannot accept these.
Battery
Single-use
These devices contain lithium batteries that can catch fire when placed in the trash or recycling bin. Do not put these items in the trash. For information on proper disposal, contact your county's solid waste or household hazardous waste program.
Devices with rechargeable batteries
Remove the cartridge or pod from the battery. Take the battery to an HHW facility or a place dedicated to recycling batteries. Do not place these batteries in an "unmanned" rechargeable battery collection box, such as at the entrance of a store or public facility. It is illegal to put rechargeable batteries in the trash.
The "button" and "extract" activate the battery
Devices or batteries with a button to turn on the atomizer are dangerous if left on. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to turn off the battery. Always turn off the battery when the device is not in use and before recycling.
If the battery is on, the button may be pressed when placed on another item in a pocket, purse, or storage container. Most batteries continue to heat the atomizer for as long as the button is pressed. Vape pens and e-cigarettes can reach temperatures of 400℉to 600℉ in seconds. Paper and cotton ignite spontaneously at 451℉, so equipment can get hot enough to start a fire.
Removing the battery from the case is a daunting task and often requires tools, so it's not recommended unless you're very familiar with how to do it. If removing the battery from the case, tape the terminals before storing or transporting the battery to the rechargeable battery collector. Let them know you have a push-button vape pen battery when you deliver it so they can put it aside for safe disassembly and packaging.
